A crown or “cap” is generally required when a significant portion of a tooth has been destroyed from decay, fractures or excessive wear. Crowns can also be used for cosmetic purposes to improve color and shape. The old style porcelain metal crowns (which are esthetically inferior) have been replaced with today’s all porcelain crowns which exhibit superior natural characteristics.

For missing teeth, a bridge is a viable option to restore the space. A bridge uses the teeth adjacent to the missing tooth as abutments (pillars) to support the false tooth (pontic). The alternative to a bridge is a dental implant.
