Periodontal Plastic Surgery
Many people hold back when they smile because they are self-conscious about their “gummy” smile. Simple surgical techniques can be used to esthetically reposition the gum line which results in a balanced natural smile line. This procedure is frequently done to create proper gingival (gum) architecture in preparation for veneers.
- Length of Procedure: 1-3 hours depending on the area being altered.
- Number of Visits: 2-4 visits which include post-operative checks.
- Anesthesia: Only local anesthetic is necessary, but other options include nitrous gas, oral and I.V. sedation.
- Duration of Results: With proper periodontal maintenance and home care, it should last a life time.
- Recovery Time: Usually minor discomfort and swelling during first week of healing which is managed with antibiotics, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
- Risks: Minor thermal sensitivity especially to cold (up to a few weeks).
